Haciendas
The haciendas of Yucatan represent a blend of colonial legacy, economic change, and cultural transformation. Originally established during the Spanish colonial period, these estates were vast agricultural centers that grew exponentially during the 19th century, largely due to the production of henequen, a fibrous plant used for making rope and twine, also known as “green gold.” There are plenty of haciendas that are open for visitors to learn about their history and see the beautiful architecture.
